Embedded Questions
What Is It?
Embedded Questions refers to question-like clauses embedded inside larger statements, reports, or noun clauses.
C1-C2 reference topic in Questions and Responses.
Why Use It?
- Build formal, polite, and academic sentences.
- Avoid question inversion inside subordinate clauses.
- Use whether and wh- clauses as subjects or complements.
Formation and Patterns
| Use | Pattern | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Subject clause | wh/whether + S + V + main verb | Whether it works remains unclear. |
| Complement | be + wh/whether + S + V | The issue is why it failed. |
| Polite question | Could you explain + wh + S + V? | Could you explain why it failed? |
Common Mistakes
- Using question order after why, where, or whether.
- Adding do-support where it is not needed.
- Forgetting that an embedded question can be a noun clause.
Exceptions & Nuances
- Whether is often better than if after prepositions and before infinitives.
