Backshifting
What Is It?
Backshifting refers to the tense movement often used when reporting earlier speech.
B1-B2 reference topic in Reported Speech.
Why Use It?
- Show that the original speech happened before the report.
- Keep time relationships clear.
- Use past forms after past reporting verbs.
Formation and Patterns
| Use | Pattern | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Present to past | am/is/are -> was/were | She said she was busy. |
| Past to past perfect | did -> had done | He said he had finished. |
| Will to would | will -> would | They said they would call. |
Common Mistakes
- Backshifting mechanically when the fact is still true and context favors the present.
- Forgetting to shift time expressions: today -> that day.
- Changing modal verbs that do not shift, such as must in some meanings.
Exceptions & Nuances
- Backshift is common, not automatic; meaning and reporting context decide.
